Dear Parents/Carers, to support our Sustainable Schools project and promote positive behaviours we are fundraising through sponsorship of students participating in our Lap-a-thon on Friday, 1st June. The oval will have an inner circuit for Pre Primary to Year 3 and an outer circuit for Year 4 to 7.  The students can achieve up to 30 laps during the 1 hour event. The event will be coordinated by our Year 7 School Leaders and volunteers from years 6&7.

The Project - Helping children to learn about the environment and to make wise food and energy choices are the first steps to providing practical opportunities for children to experience sustainability.

Students at Gidgegannup Primary School are endeavouring to connect all aspects of sustainability to learn, promote and engage in these understandings to ensure they are future stewards of the environment. The money raised will help our Sustainable Vegetable Gardening practises, continue the “Bush Tucker Trail” and expand our worm farms.

Students are engaged in hands on activities that relate to all areas of sustainability in the curriculum. Classes work alongside their buddies on a wide variety of sustainable activities and leadership opportunities are developed through our gardening club. Our future aspirations are to expand these areas and develop a composting system to enhance our soil, reduce waste and boost our produce in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way! The money raised will help build the infrastructure of the vegetable garden such as developing a shade house for students to create seed banks and grow their own seedlings for the vegetable garden and to produce ‘potted colour’, continue to develop the worm farms and therefore reduce food waste at the school.

Promoting Positive Relationships.  Our values provide the framework for our whole lives - they shape our thoughts, feelings and actions. The development of values is a complex, ongoing process but the formative stages occur in our early lives - through the dominant influences of home, family and school.  Young people who have positive relationships with their family, school and community are well placed to develop a sense of belonging and connectedness which contributes to their wellbeing and resilience.

We expect to commit up to 30% of the fundraising from the Lap-a-thon towards initiatives to tangibly acknowledge students demonstrating virtuous and positive behaviours.
